The hinge saga finally finished All that is needed is to run a bead of white matrix around the hinges and all is good As someone pointed out "they didn't know borers attacked fibreglass..... Well some borers of the numbnut variety have been at this door ;D ;D Previous hinges on the small door was a pair of brass house hinges huge, ugly and useless Cheers Atog

I LIKE em , Looks Beeeuutifulll, but I can imagine why he doesn't want to make any more There is a lot of those stainless marine fittings that are robust and very neat. I haven't seen the stainless fittings to secure the awnings and will be getting these when the time comes. Haven't been able to get awnings for the front and rear the correct size and without giving up my first born, my right arm etc. I can purchase the extrusion from a local supplier so I am going to make a bending jig and make my own ;D Cheers, tonyh

Hey Tonyh Thanks The door hinges are very nice but as you say can imagine why he doesn't want to make any more Perhaps my stainless steel madness is catching? Caravansplus was very helpful as regards the s/steel tiedowns for the awning Used the same for holding the roof hatch down Awning stays and hingesIf you come up with some good ideas about a decent set of stays I'd like to see them or perhaps buy a set of four if you make some up. As currently doing other things and haven't yet got a set of stays or hinges for the back awning...... Only using the original aluminium hinges on the front as a temporary... one seems to want to come out regularly... Won't use Gas lift stays At the length needed they are made to lift a minimum of 40kg. With two of them on a light aluminium awning..... I'll let you do the maths.... A set of stainless stays would be ideal.... but they aren't available from what I 've seen.... or are they? Any suggestions?? Cheers Atog

Hi Atog. Bucket loads of s/s gas struts out there as used in marine applications so they won`t frizz/fry/fail. A lot of the sites i looked at had an info chart re size/lift capacity.Which makes it simpler to know what you`re able to get. Wouldn`t be cheap i suspect but then if you want quality you pay. cheers

Thanks rfw
The main concern I have is the strength of the struts
The least pressure that I found locally was 40kg per strut For a very light aluminium shade it is far too much let alone 80kg (two struts) Needs to be 350mm long The calculators I've seen didn't give you the pressure the strut exerted. If that is adjustable then they are just what I need
Am thinking of waiting until I can see what is available with s/steel extrusion or maybe polished aluminium
Open to thoughts and ideas It's a long way off at the moment...
Cheers Atog

Post by atouchofglass on Nov 19, 2008 20:42:27 GMT 10
Hey Humpty They are for the front overhead section of the van... The rear overhead cupboards taper and are all different or mirror images... Will take another couple of weekends to finish making and fitting.. Going to polyglaze the areas between the cupboards before fitting them... Thanks for the interest Speaking of which.... How's your Olympic going? Photos ?? Cheers Atog

Hey Humpty Have similar issues here Time is at a premium add to that this weekend has been an absolute killer..... 34 degrees and close on 100% humidity Spent most of Saturday in air conditioning.... too hot to work You could work but that kind of weather just takes the joy out of it. Last night wasn't much better.... didn't cool down until after midnight Doesn't happen often .... but when it does Will have another go at the tapered doors today As always timber is only really used for highlights..... Rosewood is more expensive than ply and laminate Also the white of the laminate lifts the interior. Cheers Atog

Hey Gordon Like the cupboard handles/catches.No doubt the finished product will 'reflect' your work. Cheers gordon Confession time The "handles" Are actually Stainless steel folding coat hooks ;D ;D ;D Turned 'em up side down and bingo.... door handles Under $10 each This weekend has been a bit different Firstly finished the frame for the kitchen cupboard Then it was onto the 12 volt lights at the front. Lots of wiring and sweating later here's the result Added a s/s clock as well The switch for the outside light in orange to remind me to turn it off. Still plenty to do Got tomorrow to keep at it Just wish the humidity would give up before I melt. Cheers Atog

Hi ATOG, The Olympic is coming together very nicely there. It will be fantastic when it's all done. Interesting to see how you're solving problems as you go, eg the cupboard handles. A bit of creativity can be a pretty useful commodity when you're doing up a van, eh? Like the clock and the switches as well. Don Ricardo

Thanks Don R Tend to look at a lot of marine stuff to solve the problems Local ships chandlers gets regular visits ;D ;D ;D If it's stainless steel it gets lots of thought about where it could be used in the van aaarrrhhhh Saturday morning..... ;D ;D ;D Great to be alive time...... ;D ;D Woke up this morning and what did I see..... ;D Perhaps you see a theme developing .... IT'S enough to give you the Jimmy ...... So no working on the outside of the van this weekend Weather forecast....... Cyclone ..... or just torrential rain Just brilliant. What to do.... What to do..... OK no chance of doing the clearance or brake lights No chance of getting under the van to finish the Axle and wheels No chance of doing the left hand side of the door HMMMMM OK........ mill some timber for the trims instead.... Didn't want to do this quite so soon ..... but ... it's that or nothing.... Guess what guys .... I've just spent the past 4 hours milling timber for the trims around the van..... Maybe I'll do a bit of trim making tomorrow .... Currently the third Toohey's Old is calling me Cheers and Beers Atog
