From: Liz & Frank:
This custom-built 1959 Roadhaven Caravan was built by H. Pruser (Herbie) at 110 Mitchell Street Northcote, Victoria. These vans were all made to order.
This van was made to order for a Doctor from Tasmania, who declined to take it. Frank’s Uncle Fred and Aunty Mary Dyer bought the van in 1959 as new.
It was only taken on two trips to Queensland from Melbourne before Uncle and Aunt decided to move to Currumbin in Southern Queensland to live in 1963.
They only took it on a trip to the Sunshine Coast once more for a holiday. And it has been housed in their garage ever since. It was deregistered in 1991.
When visiting approximately eight years ago, Frank had mentioned to Uncle that if he ever wanted to sell the van to let him know, as we noticed that the grey strip on the side was exactly the same as the 59 Ford Customline we owned, a real coincidence!
(Story at a later date on the car)
Frank and Liz Wallace acquired it on 4th Aug 2007, after receiving a call from Uncle Fred saying that they would be moving out of their home and selling the van.
It was towed from Queensland with the Nissan Navara over three days, staying at two caravan parks on the way home. A lot heavier van than the new models, it weighs 1.5 tonne, heavy for a small van, but very well built.
The van has all original crockery, cutlery, pots, jug, fan etc. It is in original condition, including the stainless steel trim, which Frank has polished to as new.
It has a beautiful stainless steel trim wire door, two fluorescent lights which are 240 volts, the others are run off a 12 volt battery, stored in a cupboard under the wardrobe.
A gas only stove and a Morphy Richards gas only refrigerator. A pump on the floor pumps water from the tank to the sink. There is a tin lined cupboard for bread.
The floor has the original linoleum squares. The table slides across to allow the person to sit in the side near the sink. It also drops down to make a bed. There is a shelf that slides out to make the double bed at the rear.
The van dimensions are 14 foot long by 6.8 feet wide, and it is a four berth.
We hope to enjoy small trips in this lovely van over the next few years.
Frank and Liz Wallace.
