G'Day Jailbarjuice The van looks good. Shouldn't take a lot to get it back on the road. Inside only needs a spit and polish , but if you like you can use warm soapy water instead ;D ;D ;D. I can see that Sunliner being turned into a chook pen once the ply jobbie hits the road. Congratulations mate ;D. Gotta go now. A stray cattledog bitch has just wandered into the backyard and I have to go and give our blue dog "Bill " some sex education lessons. NO I WONT BE GIVING HIM ANY PRACTICAL DEMONSTRATIONS . Reddo

I,ve just washed down my van, & am finding it better than I believed possible. The roof is not aluminium, but appears to be a silver coloured rubber based paint. Its perfect where it was out of sun, & the rear has crazed with UV over 25 years The lights are Campbell, & I need 2 amber & I red. Does anyone have a source, or do I just send samples to Dale McShane at Classic Plastic on the gold coast.? He makes moulds & new lenses for about $20 each, then cheaper per copy. I reckon I could connect the wiring up & all the lights would work, then I could register it, even with the weathered ( patina?) paint. Jailbarjuice

HyDyHoDyEveryBody, Apologies to Bob & Dolly for that. Progress report. I've decided paint stripping is for others. After lots of sessions, I,ve got the van about 50% stripped. The paint is cracked back to the ply. The van sides aren't Masonite like I thought, but what appears to be 5 ply Marine Ply. They have that red/brown colouring. Top & ends are normal 3 ply. All the joinery in the van ( built by a 50 year old cabinetmaker in 1958-60) is in oregon, & all the gaps are PURRRFECT. ;D ;D ;D ;D Everywhere I look, this van is better than I ever dreamed I'd find. One funny thing about it, all of the door & cupboard hinges are fixed with all of the three screws in the doors, but only one of the two in the body. Anyone have any ideas on why this would have been done . I'll send Ditzy some more pix when its all stripped, & when its in primer. We're still working on the Sunliner, Dodge & Jailbar this weekend. I've already got a good enough chook pen Reddo, but come to think of it I've got to repair a corner the steers tore off. I suppose if your chookpen is 90 years old ,you've got to fix it occasionly. Onya JBJ Sounds like your having fun. Paint stripper , as you will have found by now will only take the layer of paint off that you have coated. . It wont eat through several layers at a time. therefore it can be a slow process. Sometimes it pays to experiment with a few different techniques for removing old paint. I have had success in the past with using a propane bottle with a duck bill burner hwich gives a broad flame. a gentle lick with the flame followed up with a 3" spatchella usually shifts enamel paint quite easily. Just dont snort the fumes. it will give ya bigger headache than that hooch you brew. Be carefull not to disturb any of the original putty and remember if ya find any nails that are coming loose do what my sex therapist told to do..... cant remember the exact words but i think it was something like " a good screw will fix things" have been looking at the photos and your van looks very similar to mine. I am beginning to wander if old Gramps Purdon might have knocked up my van a few years after yours. Ali windows and van shape looks the same. He might have gone over to fixed front windows with rubber section in the late fifties early sixties. Keep the pichas coming mate. Reddo Keep the progress reports coming mate

Hi All.
Progress report. I've stripped R.H. side & rear to bare ply, & followed Retro's advice in priming. I've painted with gripset primer & Gripset RD sealer in grey.
I've replaced the old power connection with a new Clipsal fitting 300mm lower than original, & patched the old hole.
I've re puttied the rear window using silicon & linseed putty.
I've just finished priming the roof. It was done in a rubber coated canvas style fabric, that had crazed unbelievably. Using the Gripset products, I sanded the crazed roof with 240 grit DA Sander ( Fairly lightly) Ithen gave the entire roof a good heavy coupler of coats of Gripset primer. It seems to penetrate into cracks, & leaves a plastic flexible film over the substrate. After an hour, I layed heavy rolled on coats of Gripset RD This stuff would seal over flyscreen.
I'm hoping that a light sand with an orbital will remove the bugs & shit, & then when I brush finish with Water Based Enamels I will have a totally waterproof van in the style of handfinished paint like in the late 50's. Jailbarjuice

Hopefully this will be my first successful crapbucket posting. I am still not confident it will work, but what the hell, I’ve got to give it a last good try. As we recently sold our millard van, I decided to move the Purdon next to the Sunliner, in front of my workshed. I then thought, which would look the best as towcar. Fistly Sues EH Or my rod? This is a shot of Horrie on the trailer when we picked it up in Maitland recently.. We are calling it Horrie after the guy that built it, Horace Hamson. And a shot of Horrie with Sue. And lastly a shot of the primed side ,rear, & roof as it sits today. Hopefully registered by Christmas (this year) Jailbarjuice

Lookin Good JBJ My vote goes to the EH as towcar. You probably couldn't afford the juice to get to Morgan in the HOTROD!!! That Gripset stuff has given me some ideas about what to do with the Propert before I repaint - Thanks Cheers Ray

Hey Jailbar , Horrie certainly looks to be in good nick the inside looks like she is ready to go and. that wardrobe looks about the right size for a still. What I did with my tail lights might work on yours ,Ikept looking for somthing in fitting with the look but could not find anything suitable .,so what I've done is sourced a ek or fb holden front blinker chrome surround and cut it with a hacksaw to about 40 millimeters and then I ground down a 1960Chev lense to fit you can pick them up at a swap prety cheap I put an amber and a red each side , they would compliment the Jailbar with it's Caddy lenses and not at all out of place with the Dodge.

Hi Sugarshack,
I got the original Campbell accessory lenses with the van. Some were inside & perfect, & the ones that were left on had faded & crazed terribly, so I sent them to dale at Classic Plastic to reproduce. Unfortunately he's taking much longer than normal to get them back to me, but he promises them soon. I have all of the retaining rings, etc. Jailbarjuice

Hi all, Just got the Purdon weighed. Its 500kg empty, which seems a lot for a 10’ van. The builders son said his dad built it heavy, & it really is. Towed like a dream first trip. We unpacked the annex that was inside it & put it up yesterday. Still has timber poles including a spare. It has one tiny hole about 1/4” diameter in the roof, & is virtually unmarked. Registration tomorrow hopefully. It’ll be quieter at Fingal without you Reddo, but enjoy your inlaws. ( Maybe you & Bill can hide in your van with some juice & pretend you’re at Fingal) Jailbarjuice

Hey JBJ The Purdon looks great. Question: How come the aluminium "shin pads" are on the back of your van as well as the front??? As i understand it they are there on the front as stone gaurds. Old Horace hamson might have had a bit of a "Seniors Moment" and forgot what end of the van he was workin' on. Or is it because Horrie has put his pants on back the front ;D Annexe will be a bonus , especially in that cyclone they are tipping to hit Fingal saturday arvo Reddo - beaur....bauro...beuaer...beauro of Meetior.... meati...metreea....metrol........ Ummmm..... Weather Forecaster!!!

Hi all Fingallers,
Just got Horrie registered today. 21 years & 11 months since last rego. I'm getting so much attention towing it around for rego with our Dodge, I've decided (Sue found the key to the shotgun cupboard) that Sue & I will go to Fingal in the comfort of a quiet classy car with windows.
I'm amazed how easy it was to register once I got of my arse & got into it. Within a week of getting back from Melbourne in our rod, I regreased the bearings, fitted a set of tyres I had in the shed, replaced the faded lenses, got all the lights working, welded on rear legs & new jockey wheel, & went through all the crap with various peoples.
It was easier than I thought it would be. Dont be deterred by thinking renewing expired rego will be difficult in NSW. It took 15 minutes to get a chassis number, & in less than 45 minutes I was off to the RTA.
I walked into Lismore RTA at 12.45, Was amazed to have my number come up before I could find a seat, & at 12.57 I walked out with Plates & label.. Bloody amazing.

Hi Jailbar.
Im not that big on painting. But have you tried painting in the early morning before the day starts to warm up? If this fails try your local paint supplier , he may have an additive to extend the drying time.
You gotta love painting.
Trodler.

Dennis, I bet your mum didn't try to brush acrylic........she would have been using enamel............min turps for thinners..watch out for dust and flying ants!!!

Yep JBJ - your mum would have used a turps based paint, probably thinned down a bit with turps, and painted on a winters day - probably a lead based paint too!
If you want to use acrylic then the thinning agent is water, or you can use a product called Flotrol which is a retarder. ie stops the paint from drying too quickly in order to enable it settle the brushmarks.
Maybe just handover to Sue....
good luck see you at Esk. dont be late . earlee.

Thanks trodler, humpty & earlee, It was the middle of the day by the time I was putting the paint on, & the paint was forming a skin in the tub I was painting from. I'll try both painting a bit earlier, & try to get the product you mentioned Earlee. I've painted the top a light grey, almost the same colour as the primer. We tried to paint it silver, but thats a disaster with a brush, so colour was changed. I bought a stack of timber D mould to mark out a stripe, & am now trying to work out how to get it to work with the door opening. I think I've sorted it out in my mind, just got to put it on the panels. On a more serious note, maybe my mother painting vans using turps was a contributing factor to my love of turps ;D ;D ;D Jailbarjuice

Hi JBJ Why don't you get a piece of ply instead of your d moulds and cut the flash out on it. Then you can simply reverse it for the other side and be sure you have the same shape (for better or worse) Cheers Ray
