Hi, I’ve just brought a Olympic Debonair VV. I been on the phone to Suncorp, CGU, Shannon's & ICL trying to get some insurance for the van, most said they don’t do vans over 25-30 years old. Shannon's said as long as I was only showing the van and not using it as a caravan they could help. Any idea on who I should try next.
Thanks Dave

G'day Oldxm,
Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your Olympic Debonair. I trust that you will have many happy journeys in it. You do realise that vintage caravanning can become addictive, don't you? Just thought it fair to warn you. ;D ;D ;D
There have been quite a few discussions about caravan insurance on the forum. A number of people have had to do the rounds to get a policy, so don't feel as if you are being singled out!
For what it's worth, we've got our caravan insured with GIO who have provided very satisfactory service so far. We haven't had a claim, and our aim is to never have one, but at least GIO are happy to insure vans 25+ years old (ours is 59 years old!) and were very pleasant and helpful to deal with.

Ring MHIA freecall 1800 676 700. They want to insure vintage caravans, and have done mine for some years now. They are especially good on multi vans, when you develop your fleet.
If the person you speak to has a problem, tell them to refer it to the director Phil Nossiter and to tell him that Ray sent you along. MHIA are stil very interested in packaging a vintage van policy, designed around the peculiar needs of these types of vans, if there is enough interest from this forum.
Cheers
Ray

I too had the runaround and wanted to go with Shannons as the race car is with them but again they would insure for display only.
Years ago I had a van with CIL Insurance. "Caravan Insurance Limited " so tried them again for the Munro. Cheapest by far and best conditions so I'll stick with them now.
Keep this thread updated with your progress so we can get a small list of insurers who are willing to assist the Vintage van movement.
Rod G. ps thought insuring a VV was difficult. Try insuring a car for use in the Variety Bash. One company in South Australia was it and needless to say it wasn't cheap but at least they did it.

For all those newcomers wanting to know about insurance...... My last post on the thread mentioned by Reddo....... " Whether an outcome from this thread has worked or not, I've just insured "Madonna" with Shannons and this is a copy of the section from their policy in black & white (and green)........The one thing I did have to do was advise them that the van is currently being used as intended , so consequently the premium was higher. Similarly, I discovered that the FC was insured for "Limited Use" and by being honest, the premium has increased......better to be safe than sorry when dealing with any insurance company.
The print date of the above document is 01/12/08.Just to reiterate, I advised Shannons that "Madonna" was being used on a regular basis.........they insured it for that purpose, but with a slightly increased premium Daggsey

Hi again, I had no luck with GIO, they do not cover caravans in Queensland. I received a quote from MHIA and waiting for another from Ryno. So things are looking up, I will let you know how things pan out. Dave ;D

Here we go again.
Just spoke to Shannons. I was told that using a van with modern appliances in it could lead to it not being classified "collectable", & that nothing other than the period fixtures are included in the vans values. I referred the guy to this forum, & Daggseys posting.
I'm waiting until I get final clarification later today, but I dont think it will be what I hoped to hear.
Why cant things be simple?

Hi VVers MHIA is the go. Just send description, photos of int. and ext. and how much you want to insure the van, contents, and awning/annexe for. Freecall 1800 676 700 any problems ask to speak to Phil (as mentioned in an earlier reply). Good rates good cover, we have two vans with them. That's my two bobs worth. Cheers boblor
