I was at a friend’s place the other night and he had these two pictures on his computer. They were taken a while ago somewhere in Western Victoria.. I don’t have any other details, sorry. I can’t quite pick what state the number plate is on the van, maybe someone else can recognize the van or what state the number plate is. It looks to me like the tail of a Vauxhall towing the teardrop? Jim   |

A Don caravan maybe?
With original Victorian 'J'- (67-360)- would be my guess- registration?
J on a caravan registration indicates 60's I think
What would the wire wheels on the teardrop be from?

most definate it is a Don around 47
its Identical to Gentleman Jims van
The car with the Teardrop is a Vauxhall velox and I think the Teardrop is 30s to 40s Vintage
The wires look similiar to 1935 Ford 16inch wires
the rodding community would love to own those wheels

Should the door on the teardrop be on the other side or was it just a choice of the person who built it from plans

Id hazard a guess and say that there is a door on both sides of the teardrop, you can see right throught the window. ITs a cutie but.....

you will see pics of the teardrop and the Vauxhaul that tows it under my post "teardrop vans at Bendigo Swapmeet" ......page 4 of the General section......the photos were taken in November last year.

Sorry guys but i'm afraid the cat is out of the bag. That is my rear end (or should I say my car's).
The car is a 1953 Vauxhall Velox Vagabond.
The teardrop is a 1939 Sportsman.
The wheels are 1936 16" Vauxhall. (same stud pattern as HT Holden)
I have recently fitted Velox wheels to match the car as I am heading off to Darwin in July and wanted the luxury of two matching spare wheels. I only had to change hubs and bearings so I can swap the wires back on when I return.
Sportsmans (Sportsmen?) had a door on each side, much more luxuriously appointed than your average caravan which only came with 1.
This is the combination I took to the recent Vic w/e away at Churchill Island.
Look forward to catching up with fellow V Vers on my trip north, until then I am happy to talk teardrops or V V's in general at any time,

If you would like some old caravan literature sent over ( Pre-50s ) I will photocopy and mail if you would like. There are about 60-70pages descibing old caravans, hitches, parks etc.

Hello HK nut, I would be very interested in the literature you have. I am a bit of a literature nut as well as an old car and van enthusiust. I am national librarian for the Vauxhall owners club as well as having a large collection of Vauxhall literature to cover my large collection of Vauxhall cars! I would gladly cover any costs involved, just let me know.
By the way it seems you have signed on using my forum name. Dont know how you have managed that one but perhaps Mark or Krisbee can sort it out.

Hello Reddo,
I have been following your TD exploits for a while now and I love what you have done to the "new" one (see my post in the "original vs Modified" thread).
The "real" one I dont believe to be a Sportsman but perhaps a very close period copy. As you point out the shape is a little different but also the kitchen area, doors, handles and interior cupboards are all very different to the standard Sportsman fitout.
Re the rat van concept I am very much in favour of leaving things alone if you can use them as is. (perhaps I am lazy, or do I have too much to do!) I suggest you do as little as possible to get it into use and get it out there for the world to see, I reckon you will get more favourable comments about the Ratty one than the restored one. I have an original 1925 Vauxhall that gets much more comments than my restored 1927!!!!!!!!!!

Hi leigh No worries about the old TD. At best it will be restored. More than likely be "stabilised" i am considering feathering out the flaking paint and giving the whole thing a coat of clear bondcrete. Go through the wiring so that i dont set the thing on fire when i plug into 240volts. Fix the broken xcampbells lamps and reregister it. Reckon she would look Ok behind the Humber super snipe ( Barnsley diplomats car) but the jury is still deliberating whether to make me keep it or make me move it out of the yard. If i do keep it. It will get the same treatment as the TD. do just enough to get it registered. Go through the mechanicals to ensure its reliable. and use as is. Might have to hose the windscreen to see through the dust  Reddo |

Something like what you're proposing for the old Snipe and T D would create more interest and get more looks than the Top Ten "Bling Bling" cars at Wintersun !!!!!
