Well guys, I'm going to kick off this new board with some pics of my recently acquired 1939 Chev
that will be used to tow my two 1940's caravans, the "Don" and the "1948 Holiday Home":

The Chev and the "Don" are a perfect period match, as the Don caravans of the same shape and size
as mine with the leadlight windows
were manufactured pre war, even though mine was manufactured in the late 40's.

I was originally going to use my 1949 FX for the job, until the "1948 Holiday Home" weighed in at 940kg
(due to its Jarrah frame & floor) :( .....
the FX has still has a grey motor, its original "knee action" shockies and brakes, so it would have been struggling :-/ :-/

Enter the Chev Standard ......216ci straight six, 4.2 rear drive and a recently installed 350 Chev clutch plate
....it has the torque of a light truck and won't even know 940kg is hangin' off the back. The only thing to do is to add a towbar.

I had the Chev cruising down the freeway yesterday and it was doing 90 - 95 kph easily without annoying traffic,
and I expect it will do the same with a caravan in tow :o :o

Does that car have 3 or 4 speed gear box. In any event you will never have to take it out of top gear no matter which hill you tackle. Those motors hate being revved, but they LOVE to lug along.

Did you notice the rear tail light is the same shape as the DON logo on the back of the van.

its a three speed John, but a 4th gear would be good ;D

Good pick up re the badge .....I reckon they'll make a nice pair .....

Looks like a nice unit Mark, You raise a good point re towing power.

The 14' Carapark van we have says 630 on the old rego label, so I assume 630 kg.

I haven't had an opportunity to tow it behind my grey powered FE Holden yet, but was wondering if you or any one else on the forum has had experience with this combination.

Our 9' 6" ply van tows well but it is only 230 kg

I look forward to seeing the Don & the 48 behind the Chev.

1 at a time though!

Thanks for your comments Gary .......

I would be surprised if your 14' Carapark van is only 630kg .....I would take it over a weighbridge.

The old magazines show the early Holdens towing larger vans, but back in those days 35 to 40 mph (70 to 80kph)with a van in tow on the highways was the norm.
Anybody towing a van these days at that speed could be seen as a menace on the roads.

My FC has a 186 fitted, and tows "Joker 11" comfortably at 95 to 100kmh, its a recommended conversion for towing larger vans.

Mark, Have you got the bits to fill in the centre of the dashboard and the glovebox on your 39 ??? ??? ???......I have ::) ::)

How do I say this without sounding too serious and boring? ::) ::)

I'm not a rodder ....and like thingz just the way they were ...... but having said that, I have a great appreciation and admiration for rodders and the machines they build.

As for painting flames on the side of a car .......mmmm..........each to their own ....

I also luv Aussie muscle cars and have collected and raced them over the years..... Ditz and I also enjoy the awsome v8 supercars and historic touring cars ....

Peter .....yes please ....I need some bits to fill the holes in the dash.

Mark,
If i remember correctly a radio fits in the square hole and two lower holes and clock fits in square of glove box.
You might want to contact Resurrection radio in Prahan Victoria for possiblity of radio to fit.
hope this is of assistance to you.
ps my dad had one of these chevs when i was a kid and i used to snooze on the front wing at picnics.
(o for the good old days )

Let me know what I owe you for postage.

Mine is the poverty model (standard ) and didn't come with a clock in the glovebox .....it just has the plate (where the clock goes on the Master Deluxe model) with the Chev logo.

The radio obviously goes in the cut out square and bottom two holes, but what goes in the top two holes?
Maybe these holes are for the plate you're referring to Peter?

The plate I am sending you covers the bottom 2/3 of the dash.....you could probably make something to cover the rest......could'nt see the logo in your glovebox so that is coming too!!!

Mark, visor is a FULTON brand and available at swap meets anywhere in the U.S. for around $US 400, so thats a guide if you see one one ebay. They come in two halves, so they are not all that big to post. In U.S terms, postage is roughly $US10/lb. Hope that is clear to you. If you are serious, I could chase one up for you.
For good highway cruising you can get a 3.55 crown wheel and pinion, lets you sit on 100 k all day without reving your heart out. Later model pressure fed 235 is a dead easy swap if you didn't know already. Go forever. I'm right into this sort of thing, as are lots of others as you already know.

I know they can be bought from the states, but need it asap.

Can't get one from the usual suppliers in Perth :(

Two weeks ago had the same problem, pulled the pump apart and took the lot to our local bearing retailer and got new shaft, bearing and ceramic seal all for about $27. Pressed the pulley off and pressed onto new shaft with the 20 ton press at the local garage (another $10), all back in with new gasket (gasket paper from Repco). Easy mornings work and will last another 50 years.
Hope I am here to see that, cause I'm 67 now. ;D

Well Mark.....your chev is beautiful just the way it is......luv it with the van.....and the boy is impressed, you have lots in common it seems - aussie muscle cars/racing etc......and you both appreciates old cars just for their stand out beauty!!! Nothing compares....enjoy!!!

Hi Mark, 6months ago I bought a '37, Chev Master Deluxe, Aussie build from Adelaide. 99% Original, just runs an 12v alternator now, starts on 6v. The 216 drives hard. I have bought a couple of items for it from Chevs of the 40's, in the US. I would also like to out a sunvisor on mine, if anyone spots one, & over riders would be nice. I'm in Qld. I will try to post a shot of the Chev and recently puchased Olympic 60's van.
