Just what are you doing and where are you going if you have a giant plastic/concrete Silverback Gorilla in the flatbed of your Ute? I really want the back story of that guy.

www.sheepbloke.com.au website is very funny indeed!

Talking to an old bloke t'other day..NO RAY / AL! Not talking to me self....a real old bloke, a carpenter and tradesman, and he was telling me about an office building he was fitting out in the old days.

The architect (A) chipped him about the screws not being aligned on some of the doors the old bloke (TOB) was hanging. TOB pointed out to the A that the screws were tensioned correctly.... not good enough, the A wanted the screws aligned correctly, so TOB aligned them and the A was happy.... after he was gone TOB re- tensioned them... and he was happy.

Personally.... I think the A was right, but I didn't say that to TOB because he was giving me a heap of slot headed screws.

The moral of the story is............ keep your mouth shut sometimes.

Cobber.

PS.... Rod, have you got any photos of your tea towel rail installed yet.....I've resurrected this thread just so you can show us what she looks like ;)

Oh my goodness A tea towel thread! I just discovered this. You guys are too much! All I can say is Australians have the BEST tea towels! I buy them everywhere at thrift stores up here in Canada as people bring them home as souvenirs and never use them because they are to pretty. They just don't know that the towels are actually made to function and are the best tea towels in the world. I sing their praises to everyone. My caravan is full of them. I will get a picture next time out.

Hi Bolerific

Not only Canadians didn't use their tea towels, Mum used to buy them and keep them 'for good', never dried a dish in anger ::) If it's a good Aussie tea towel it will more than likely have "Made in Ireland" on it ???
These days, like everything else they are probably Made in China >:(

DAAAVE !

You've done it again...... you will not let sleeping dogs lay will you ? :( ::)

And now Mabel (bolerific) is confused ;)
The thread is about Rods tea towel rail, right ?............ OK, it got railroaded a couple of times but I'm sure Dave wants to hear what happened to the rail he sent Rod....what about it Rod ???

While we are waiting (and I'm waiting for the paint to dry) I thought I would show you all the tea towel rail and tea towel in Marks East Coast Caravan, that was built by a bloke who made things instead of buying things.

He obviously made this rail.

The tea towel is kind of different too.. in that it will never fall off the rail no matter how rough the road.

But..... if you want to get it off to do some serious wiping up you just lift the rail up and slide the towel off.

How good is that ? 8-)

Are there anymore home made tea towel rails out there ???

Cobber.

I think you are correct about the tea towels being made in china. I did not buy one when I was in your lovely country in March for that very reason. Not made of the nice linen anymore. But I was able to purchase a few at the Opp shops I visited.

Geez.. I tell ya wot..
I am a bit cheesed off....
Been given this here TEA towel rail gizzmo some thought..
anbd.. i reckon all you tarts are one eyed..
Being a beer swiller from way back i wanna know why vintage caravans cant have a BEER towel rail instead.

Do we just use thgese towels of yours after we have had a cuppa tea. ??
Seems bloody pointless just having a towel to mop up after tea totallers..
Why are you lot discrimminating against us drunksbeer drinkers.??
Surely we spill more juice than a boiled leaf guzzler??

Thats it then .. i am orf ta the "Shed of invention" to develop my OWN version of a beer towel...No ... it aint 5ft6 inches .. blonde with blue eyes. :P :P :P :P

The Cadet has both the double swivel rack and the chrome over brass "broad toilet roll holder" ( about 12"wide ) mounted on the end of the table ) style tea towel rails....

I use the double swing out one to hang the tin mugs.. egg flip....tongs etc on when preparing another gourmet meal over the gas flame.. ( bacon and eggs of a morning.. snags and eggs at night)... ;) :D ;D

Just to clarify.. the tin mugs are NOT FOR TEA... they have been specially trained to fill up with beer or Port only.

Photos soon......

Oh yeah... Watched better homes and Gardens last night... had a segment on screws...Lotsn lots of Phillips head screws.... a short demo of just how useless the old slot head is... :o :o
The sensitive new age carpenter was always in a tear arse hurry.. stuffing his 18Volt 50 horsepower cordless drill in his cross heads and whacking em into everything at over 100 screws a minute....
::)
I reckon if ya handed him a stanley egg beater drill with a 1/8th inch bit in it .. he would have scratched his head and gone to an advert break while he asked someone WTF is this ;D.

Slot heads are a dying species ( and so are old school carpenters by the look of it).... but i love the old slot heads wether they are standing up ( verts) or laying on thier side..( horrys)...brass.. chrome over brass. ( upper class) .. or just plain old mild steel.( barnsleys ;) :D ;D)

Skews me i have ta go do the wiping up... Trish said so.... :P

....so this is probably not a good time to tell you I passed up a whole cabinet full of boxed slot head screws at a garage sale last week....(guy was retiring from the building trade).....you coulda used 'em to nail your beer towel rail to the wall.... ;D ;D

You could have been president of the slot head society with that collection Kaybee.. :P

Lemme know if ya come across a cabinet full of towel rails .. i reckon i could shift a few here on the forum..
Yours sincerely in slot heads.... and all forms of rails

G'day Reddo,

Welcome to the “Tea Towel Rail” thread....I knew you were having a hard time trying to pretend it was of no interest to you :P.

Mate............... my understanding is that tea towels, and the rail we hang them on, got their name from the practice of people doing the wiping up after TEA TIME ( I think they call it “dinner time” these days) when we would wash ALL the utensils used during the day..... one wash up to “save water” ::)

So................. the tea towel was used to dry the beer glasses first (while the tea towel was still clean)..then all the other items used during the day.

Now..... you made mention of a “broad toilet roll holder”.
These modern paper towel holders are not acceptable on this thread I would venture to say, in fact I'm not sure they should be used in VINTAGE CARAVANS at all :-/.
If anybody disputes this statement I suggest they start a thread on “paper towel holders”.

I sometimes think people deliberately try to derail this “Tea Towel Rail” thread with talk of Gorillas.... slot headed screws..there has even been mention of nuts...nails and the unmentionable modern type of screw..... all to no avail because along come good folk like humpyboy with another example of a genuine Tea Towel Rail :-*

Speaking of unmentionables.... Kaybees post upset me so that I went outside to have a calming pipe and then went straight to bed.

Cobber.

Hello Albert..
Truth is mate i had posted on this thread way back about page 2.
Questions where asked if i even knew how to use a TEA towel...

Now listen up old china... i think you willl find that my tea towel rails are a dang sight more like a tea towel rail than that home made abomination you threw up on reply #80.
If ever there was an over sized toilet roll holder... well... thats it.. :-/

Here is the one on the end of the table i was refering to in one of my posts last night..

2 neat /period brackets holding a length ( about 10 or 12") of 1/4"aluminium tubing with a piece of dowel through the inside to give it strength.

I wouldnt dare mention paper towel roll holders .... but you did.
Damn shame ya have tarnished this thread with plastic stuff you would only find in a classic caravan.

Shame shame shame Albert

OK, due to popular command by some old fart I am posting pictures of my tea towel rail. The PROPER type to use in a vintage caravan, not like some of these refugees from some old bathroom and the like.

WOW,,,,
How "bland" and ordinary is that genuine vintage caravan tea towel rail ::) ???,
If THAT is wot is supposta be on the walls of a vintage caravan then i will havta consider building a van with no walls so i dont have to attach something so ....... ::) ::) ::)....umm.. basic....??... plain??..... Umm.....geez .. just plain bland i suppose is the best way to describe it ;)

Can vouch for the authenticity of both the rails in the photos i put up of the double and single tea towel rails.
even though they where not original items in the Cadet.

The one on the end of the table came from "The wreckerys" 1958 Furness van i demolished about 4 or 5 years ago..
The double rail holder came out of the van i brought home from up near muswellbrook back a few years ago.
Both where covered in crud when i removed them and i believe they where both original fittings in both 50s vans...

No household fittings here 8-) 8-) 8-).
Nothing that even vaguely resembles a Bunnings 2011 $2.99 cheapo replica plastic coated round bar fake ;) :P :P

Dear Dave,,'
I thought we had sorted that issue..
Kaybee explained it quite clearly for us.. ::) ???.. from what i can make out....

All them dodgey Bunnings screws with "crosses"on the top are the advanced form of slot heads...
They give you the option of setting them at 90 degrees to the last horizontal or vertical slot position they where in without touching them with a screwdriver..... ;) ;D
defeats all the arguements about running them with the grain of the timber or in parallel with the objects longest side...

Simple really.... ;) :D ;)

Okay here is my 2 cents worth. This is the tea towel holder I use. It was already installed in my 67 trailer when we got it. It looks 1967 vintage enough for me. Absolutely nowhere to hang a rail. I always make sure the Australian Tea Towels are hanging upside down! You guys are too much with your screws already!

So much has happened since my last post on this interesting thread :o.

DC3TD.... Thanks for the demonstration on how you made your “home made tea towel rail”. Shame you don't have a tea towel to hang on it :-/
You should make another one and put it on Ebay to see what its market value might be..... you will probably be surprised :D.

'arold....in spite of his cheek showed us a very nice tea towel rail... thanks Son :-*

RODNET..... You probably thought posting a photo of the genuine 1959 tea towel rail oldfart sent you would finish off this thread YOU STARTED...... NO ..bad luck...Reddo has now decided to skite about some of the vintage caravans he has demolished over the years and then tried to re-start the discussion on slot head screws then..................

Kaybee tries to insult him by saying
“jeez willya look at that ...he's learnt sumthin'!....I'm so proud of him”
Fear not Kaybee............ he's learnt nothing... still uses oil based enamel to paint plywood caravans :P ::)

bolerific.......... Thanks for showing us your tea towel hook.... not sure the inside of a cupboard door is the best place for it though, does the tea towel ever dry ??? ::) :-/

You think some of us carry on too much about screws ???

There is a right way and a wrong way do do most anything and..... the only right screw to use during the restoration of a vintage caravan is............ SLOT HEADED SCREWS !
Some people who even do dodgy re-builds of the entire interior of their vans insist on using slot head screws....because they know it looks right.......... go figure that out aye? ::) ;)

Now... about hanging your Australian tea towels upside down................... wrong !
I have positively logical proof that Australia is on top of the world and that any reference to Oz being upside down is therefore wrong.............. it is written.

Gday Cobber. Over 40 years ago when i made the first towel rail & dunny roll holder the boss at BMC like it that much he had me make a jig for them.Subsequently i made dozens of them which were then sent to Falshaw Bumper Service (industry chrome platers) at Condell Pk. Lost count of how many were fitted to our morris ld5`s,austin 245`s & rfw coaches through the years.Oh, & bugger, they were pop rivetted to the fixtures!. cheers
