Many thanks for the info, firefighter. My tow bar shows downward weight limit of 120kgs so I guess that means that I can't tow the Baravan if it weighs more than 1200kgs fully loaded even though it's Agg is 1524kgs. Cheers Thomo

hi thomo you may still be able to tow your van provided the max towing weight for your car/towbar isn't exceeded. the max towing weight should be stamped on the towbar if it's a reasonably new one and the max for your car should be in the owner's manual. if they're more than 1525kg, then there won't be a problem. all you need to do then is load your van so that the weight on your ball is less than 120kg. you can check that with a set of bathroom scales. geoff 'n jude

Hi Thomo
Just be aware that 120Kg is a hell of a lot of ball weight. Do your best to try and set things up so that you dont end up with that sort of weight on your towball. While it might be legal .. it will be murder on any towcar that has coil springs at the rear.

Hi All My two bobs worth. A good rule of thumb, is 10% of the loaded weigh of the van should be on the ball, and the van will not wag its tail and add suitable weigh distribution bars. Example , we tow our Olympic with a Subaru Outback -- towing capacity 1600kgs and 160kgs ball mass, with 250 kg weight distribution bars. We tour generally with about 1500kgs and150kgs on the ball and a set of 250kg capacity weight distribution bars and find this a very safe and legal set up. We have and are travelling all over Aust. and in the last week have been in the Birdsville area in S-W Q'ld and handled the conditions perfectly. Cheers boblor
