Hi Kathryn, That is a Propert you've got yourself, so you can take the '?' away. Not only a Propert, but looks to be in very nice condition as well. I think there will be a few other Propert owners out there who will wish that there's had been in as good condition when they bought them. For a 'sight unseen' purchase, you've done very well for yourself indeed! The serial number plate appears to be missing. It is usually located at the back adjacent to the left hand tail light. The serial plate will enable you to work out how old your little van is, so when you go to collect it make sure you ask the seller if they have it. Hopefully they took it off when repainting the van or something, and have it safely stored away. Don Ricardo

Hello Don Thanks for confirming. Ye I noticed the plate wasnt there so was a little concerned. The seller has told me she will take a photo of the plate for me The seller is very nice and selling for her parents. She said her parents have owned it for 35 or 40 years Her father she said was very fussy. I hadnt seen any van photos until today so was very anxious to see them. In the ebay ad the photo didnt come up so I had no idea what condition it was in so it was just her description that I trusted. Very much sight unseen !! but I knew if I wanted it I had to purchase it there and then. Paul said he would like to drive to Newcastle to pick it up so will see. Or we will have it picked up by some co that is reputable like connected to Shannons? We will be able to fit it in our brick garage so it will be well looked after. Paul is very happy it seems not to need work to be done on it Regards Kathryn

Congratulation Guys, that is one clean looking unit.
Don't just accept a picture of the ID plate, make sure it come with the van, as it does affect its value.
It does look like it has been modified internally, as the area on the left should be where the bench sits and table hangs. The right side cupboards have also been added at some time. Or it could be that the van was bought "bare" and the owner added cupboards to his liking right from the start. Maybe the parents could fill you in on that part of its history. Going by the round windows, it's certainly a fifties van, the plate will identify how far back it actually goes.
Also, don't forget the mattress - it should be a three piece if it is original.
Hope you enjoy this little treasure and look after it. They develop a personality of their own! ;D ;D

Hi Ray yes I really want to have the plate and know its very important to have
Pushing the buy it now button on Ebay was easy now is the hard part !
Making sure it gets here safe and sound etc.
I will ask the daughter if the parents have any documentation, receipts etc
Dont worry we will look after it. My husband looks after things so he will fuss over it.
The garage is ready for it
Regards Kathryn

Really nice Property you got yourself there!
yes you need to get that plate as Ray said. The serial number is stamped into the ply underneath the plate, but it's better to have the plate.

Hi Kathryn,
Congratulations on winning the Propert.
I have been looking for a Propert for some time now and saw this one on ebay at about 3.00pm on Tuesday, but wasn't prepared to do the "Buy it now" without seeing a photo. I had contacted the daughter for photos, but by the time she contacted me back you had already purchased it.
As it turns out it's a great looking van, so many congratulations.
Kind regards Diane

Hi Cathie Ye thanks for input Hi Diane and all When I saw the ad I thought there is no photo so I emailed the seller. I sat there waiting for an email and after a while I thought I have bought a couple of houses sight unseen before I have to hit the buy now button I figured what ever happens I will honour the sale and buy it regardless. I didnt actually get to see the photos until the next day and I was so happy to see the photos. The sellers father is ill so I dont want to hassle the parents about details. I have been given the parents number and will ring them later today. Esky will have a good home here. Oy ye the seller said she has been offered more money so I am so happy she is very good and honest I would have honoured the sale no matter what I guess I will start collecting these now!! This is from the 2000 Sydney Olympics Cheers Kathryn

Hello I have just spoken to the parents re the Propert, Unfortunately the husband is not well and so I didnt want to hassle them with details and asking lot of questions. To them it was a caravan they looked after but werent really fussed about dates etc. They have told me that the registration papers state it is 1959 and the number plates TU . . . . (NSW rego) They said they have had it for about 35 years and originally bought it from a person in the area. So I believe the caravan may been continuously registered since 1959. I want to keep the continuous rego going if thats the case Does the rego TU tell me how old the rego is? Unfortunately though I was told the father disposed of the makers plate years ago but was also told by the mother the plate was not on there when they bought it 35 years ago. That is a little dissapointing but thats the way it is. I would have to get a replica plate made if I wanted one Regards Kathryn

Great looking little van you've there, but for the life of me I can't work out how these Propert's work! I look at closed and opened photos but it's still a mystery to me! We're hoping to have our van finished for the nationals at Mildura, hopefully there'll be some there, I've gotta get a close look at one these things!
Hang on, I've had another look, so when it's folded up, the bed is part of the moving bit that comes down over the draw bar?
If we get to the nationals, please please PLEASE can someone show me one these amazing things in action!

We finally took Esky out of the garage and took the annex out of the bag to see if we could put it up. It was bigger than we expected so ran out of room on our front yard ! We had no idea how big it was as its been in the bag since we bought the Propert It's a great size so we now know how to put it up Kathryn

Hi Kathryn
Good to see you've still got your Propert.
Have you been round about in your Esky in the last 3 years?
You'll have to come to an event in your area. You live in Brisbane don't you? PLENTY going on in this area to find an event to go to in 2013!!!
Cheers

Hi Smiles Esky went out tonight for the first time in over 2 years ! I know we are terrible but we had it stored under the house at a property we own. Yes we are in Brisbane. On our way home tonight we took it to a classic car get togther held each Saturday night. People were fascinated by my "Folding caravan" but we left the key at home so couldnt open it up and they could only look in through the windows. Photos attached We also couldnt get to those curved special pieces of wood used to prevent the caravan from closing as they were locked in the caravan so improvised with two pieces of wood we could find. I assume all Properts have those special curved pieces of wood to stop it from collapsing or I think the previous owner may have made them himself. I cant remember now Cheers Kathryn

I know caravans usually get female names but I cant see my Propert Esky having a girls name hence one of the reasons I chose Esky Are male or generic names usually given to Properts? Just curious Also what is the best way to care for the original lino ? Thanks Kathryn

Hi, Esky is adorable.
I have a Propert named Penelope P. Propert by the previous owner. I call her Penny as there was already a Penelope in the family.....Most people seem to name old vans.... like a lot of old cars.... with girls names.... but it really depends on the owner and whether they think it's a girl or a boy.
I haven't taken her away yet, but I did remove the old lino wax with the ammonia windex... I'm just having trouble finding new wax to replace it with. Then its just a case of dry mopping it....
I have with Penny two bits of wood that fill in the gap created when unfolded to keep the breeze out.... not sure how curved they are without going out to look at them...? Also not sure how much use they would be to stop her folding up though.... There are two little holes in the sides that go through all three layers, and half a long bolt that I do intend to replace, that would have been used to stop them folding up...
The only story I've come across about them folding up by accident had to do with a broken jockey wheel...

Hi Vanessa
We hadnt taken ESKY out for a while and couldnt remember what was what.
Those two curved pieces are to prevent it closing. We also have those bolts.
They seem to be an extra bit of security to stop it closing.
The owner before us also made up a sliding screen door
Like the name Penny P that works well Actually its better ESKY is a boy as I already have a very Girly Pink Caravan so Esky will be more masculine !

Propert also made kitchen ware. This is a flour sifter I believe from 1955 now added to the caravan
