Hi all,
Just thought I would give you another update on what's happening with the van. As you can see, it's pretty slow progress. I've also purchased another 57 Chevy, which I am also in the process of restoring. So between the Chevy and the van, the Chevy is getting more attention so that I can restore and sell it. As you can see, I took a couple of photos of the Chevy with the caravan, which looks cool.
Anyway, back to the van, I found a bit of dry rot in the van, after I pulled off the Aluminum. Not that bad though for a caravan that's 51 years old.
I also picked up a refrigerator which fits perfectly inside the old icebox area. I am going to put an old fridge logo on the door of it.
Also, I bought an electric, two burner hot plate, which doesn't look too bad considering it's new. I pretty much bought it in case I ever run out of gas, as I plan on restoring the original gas burner.
I also will be fitting a port-a-loo under the lid of one of the booth seats in case of an emergency, especially when you have two kids under 7 years old.
I have a few questions to ask too. I live on the Gold Coast, does anyone know where I can buy certain things for the van like the two front side and two back side J mold (I think that's what it's called) also the chrome that goes around the edge of the table? Old style light switches and power points and exterior and interior lights. I am also on the hunt for old style laminex and lino too.
I would also like to take the opportunity to let everyone know how fantastic it is to see you all restoring these great old caravans and giving them a new life. Over the last 30 years or so people have been restoring the old cars and it seems like over the last 5 - 10 years people are starting to restore these wonderful old caravans too.
You can see the bottom right photo, there is some dry rot.
Also removing the aluminum.
Removing the dry rot - actual frame seems to be in good condition.
Cut out the old dry rot, replacing it with marine ply.
Thought I would take this photo and see how they look together.
Just a couple more photos.
With a 59 Ford Fairlane that I had and recently sold.
Here is the fridge I bought - pretty good price $119.00. I will remove those stickers.
The new hot plate I bought. Doesn't look too bad inside the old van. It only cost about $60.00
The original gas burner which will be restored and used most of the time.
Below are some vans that are lying around near the Southport area. The big one is down south near Iluka. The Phoenix caravan, I have asked about buying parts from the inside (lights, the table etc) and the old guy who would be in his late 80's doesn't want to sell a thing off it and he also said it is blocking the westerly winds. He told me if I started removing bits and pieces from it, it would fall apart...I think it's too late for that. I managed to look inside and it's complete with all the original fitting and cushions.
This one was in Labrador.
Not sure what this is, i'm sure some of you will know.
Does anyone know the whereabouts of any the following caravans:
*There were two 1950's bondwood vans up at Mt Tambourine up until about a year ago, at a big second hand shop. It looks like it used to be an old fun park there. They had sold written on them. When I went back there one day, they were gone. Hopefully they're getting restored.
*There was one west of Maryborough, a pink and blue one.
*One in Maitland, in an old farmers shed. About a twenty footer
*There was alsp one at Mermaid Beach a few years back in a car port, the house was run down, it has since been renovated, but the van is gone.
I wish I had a camera when I found these vans, they were all bondwood with port-holes.
Looking forward to hearing some responses. Take care.
Shane
