Hi all. My name is Shane. I just joined up with you guys. Yesterday I purchased my first cool old caravan.
A few months ago it was advertised in the trading post. I went and had a look at it. The guy said he wanted over $2500 for it. He told me that an old guy had been living in it under a car port for 35 years. At the time I thought it was a bit too expensive as it was missing the booth and a desk had been built in its place. So I let it go.
A couple of weeks later, I was talking about it with a friend. We went and had another look at it. The guy said that I could have it for around $2000. I still let it go.
Another couple of weeks past and I rang the guy again. He had sold it. He didn’t have the guy who bought its phone number, but he told me the caravan went to Nerang (Gold Coast), luckily only around 10 minutes from where we live.
Another couple of weeks past and I was still thinking about it a lot. We decided to go for a drive to Nerang. I said to my partner, Michelle that we will drive to houses where there are acreage properties and it is probably sitting next to a shed somewhere.
The very first street that we turned down where the houses where on acreage, there it was sitting beside a shed with a blue tarp over the roof! I asked the lady if it was for sale. She said, no definitely not. I left my phone number with her anyway and told her that if her son-in-law was interested in selling in it, then he could call me.
Two or three days later, sure enough he rang me. He told me that he wanted $2700 for it. So I was back to square one! I offered him $1500 and he told me that I wouldn’t get onto the property unless the offer was over $2000. So once again I let it go.
A few weeks went by and he gave me a call. He told me that if I wanted it, I could have it for $1500. I was down there within an hour. And now she’s home with me!
I was looking at all of the screws on the aluminium and thinking that I should peel it back to have a look at it.
And this is what was underneath... Should I take the aluminium off? I would really like to. I know there will be some screw holes to fill in but I think it will look really cool.
Here are some photos of the inside. As you can see, it's been freshly painted. It's not really the colour scheme that I want. I plan on changing it.
It looks like a homemade range hood. Should I remove it?
This is the homemade desk that was built many years ago. I have already pulled it out. I plan on replacing it with the original style booth set up. Any original photos of how a Castle Caravan looks inside would be greatly appreciated. Does anyone know what the best type of glue is to use when making the booth out of marine ply?
Before...
After...
As you can see, I pulled the brown square lino out. I think that’s the original lino that was under it.
Any advice on restoring it would be appreciated.
I am looking for original style side & back tail lights and also interior lights. One on each end and one in the middle. Did they also have a light outside next to the door? If anyone is selling them could you please let me know?
I would really like to do the caravan as 50’s as possible. I have a 57 Chev & an EH Holden to tow it around with.
Regards,
Shane
