I'm gonna sound stupid here and I don't mind if I give u all a good chuckle... at my expense! Is my stove a kero/gas or metho stove??? Also the chassis of my van is pretty rusted, do I need to replace it? I am dying to get it towable and the rest will come in time!

Hi Trish Hard to say what the chassis is like without having a look but from the photos I would say it has a lot of surface rust. Easiest way to clean this up is by sandblasting - Cobber did find someone with a mobile sandblaster who came to his place & sandblasted the chassis of his 36. I cleaned my van's chassis with wire brush & sander then after a bit of paint looks good as new (good enough for me anyway) Check where the welds are on the chassis to make sure they haven't broken and check were the rust areas are to check the pitting(where rust eats into metal) isn't too deep. I'm no expert but hope this helps Neil

Hey Trish, Don't ever feel "stupid" asking questions here...we've all started at some time and all needed help along the way. I'm not familiar with the "Parkinson" brand of stove, but my guess is that it's gas. You can check by turning it upside down and looking for copper tubing running from the black knobs at the front, and going back to a single inlet with a threaded end on it. Usually the inlet is on one side (or could be at the back) of the stove. You have a gas bottle holder on the drawbar with what looks like the remains of the gas tubing hanging to one side in one of your photos. This tubing should have a gas regulator fitted to the (drawbar) end of it to connect it to the gas bottle. One hurdle you might have to overcome with the registration process is that your tow coupling is technically not legal anymore. There are other members who have found ways around getting their old couplings registered, but just bear in mind that if you strike a picky person in the rego process they may knock you back. cheers, Al.

Thanks Neil and Al for the quick reply.
I did notice the gas tubing, but was worried someone might had done a dodgy and were running it on gas although it was not made for it. I will have another look tomorrow.
I will also check the rust for all the points that you noted and I hope what is there can be saved because I'd like to keep the van as original as possible as this is what first attracted me to it. My other half Dave had to grind the jockey wheel off to move the van, it had rusted and fused itself, so some of the couplings wont be original anyhow but I suppose the rules are there for a reason and if it is safer to change the couplings I will.
Thanks again and I'll keep you posted......Trish =)

"Bessiebelle" was sold this morning to a lovely "Hot Rodding" couple from Loch in Victoria to tow behind either a late 30's Dodge and or their FJ Holden. I am giving them the link to the site in the hope that they'll join us. They are restoring her to the hilt and colour matching her to the car so hopefully they will keep in touch and show us how they are going. I'm glad she has gone to a great home and new owners that will love her and give her the "special" treatment as I hadn't so far had the time.
