Hello Have been floating around the board for a month or 2, Oh`ing and Argh`ing at all the great caravans and work ppl have put into them. Have just acquired a Olympic Riviera. Can someone tell me what is the age of this? Also the floor in front of door and dining table is spongie and thinking of ripping the floor up there... Would be better to do the who van? or just there? Regards V D R

Welcome Voodooroo To me the give away here is the moulded fibreglass seating and bedbases. This looks like a 70's van to me. Double windows and the style of moulding on the outside also say 70's to me. Also the winding mechanism on the roof hatch. Boblor or Bobandjacqui could give you a better idea. My van is a '68 Seashells a '69 and no moulded seating/bedbases. vintagecaravans.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=photo&action=display&thread=1473Just an opinion May be wrong Cheers Atog

Thanks for the welcome guys and/or girls.. The floor on the last picture ,The entrance way and front of dining table is a little spongy. Would be best to pull up that part and lay something down? Or pull up the whole thing? Is it possible to spot patch the flooring system on a cara? V D R

Re the floor, it might depend on the spot and what's there to support it. Mine had had a previous attempt at spot patching an area in the centre of the van before I bought it and that hadn't worked because the new ply was supported only by a narrow strip of metal around the edges which made it very bouncy! It might have worked with some additional rails welded to the frame to support the patch. HOwever in my case the floor had other issues as well and it seemed easier to put a new one in. Nice looking van - sounds like you got a good deal

The forum has a policy of not discussing pricing on line. But You would have to hunt around and see what others are being sold for and deduct the problems your van has.
Not a $ price I know but it is the best we can to on the forum
All the best. It's good to see someone that recognised the issues and abilities to or not to repair a van.
Hope all goes well Atog

Morning
On the last photo in the entrance there are the light switches
One is 240v One is 12v in One is 12V out
Can I run a extension cable from my house to the olug on the side of the caravan and expect it to run lights power points as normal?
Is there a place to put a battery and use it as a 12v input and where would they go on these.?
Thanks

Is there a place to put a battery and use it as a 12v input and where would they go on these.? Thanks V D R It should be only a matter of plugging in a 240V 10/15A power cable and the 240V lights and Power points will work. (many of these older Vans only have 10A inlet). If you intend loading the Van with Mod cons then you will need to have a the van rewired for 15A and Safety Switch by a Electrician, It is not usual for the Vans of this vintage to have a 240V-12V DC power supply. It is not usual for the Vans of this vintage to have a Battery. You only need the 12V lights when using the caravan off grid. In General the operation of the 12V lights on these older Vans is from the Auxiliary feed (Hot Wire) from the tug, usually Pin 2 of the 7Pin connector, if your van has two light bulbs in the light fittings the smaller Bulb is the 12V one(in picture 4 above there appears to be 2 bulbs in the fitting). That is assuming the Tug has the corresponding Auxiliary (Hot Wire). On late model Vehicles with OEM trailer looms this pin will be connected to the reversing lights, as most Caravans do not have reversing lights, this can be disconnected and a Fused wire run direct from the battery. I can only guess that the Inside/Outside switches are for, maybe to operate the inside and outside lights on 12V ??. One of the members who know these vans will I am sure correct my errors. Rattles

Welcome Voodooroo, to VV
Doing the floor again depends on how badly it's damaged and to what extent of the floor is needing repair, as with all the other replies and work done by other Olympic owners, sometimes you can get away with just repairing that section or sometimes the whole floor may need to be done, generally it's best to get someone who's done a resto on a floor to have a look to see what extent of the damage.
Discussing pricing on here is against the rules of the forum.....generally you get an idea of Olympic's prices from the sales on Gumtree & Ebay......sometimes there more, sometimes there less in cost pricing, depends on the condition, etc and also what the seller / buyer wants to receive or pay for it.....and in saying that prices can be sometimes all over the shot, your best to speak to Bob Taylor (Boblor), he is the expert in Olympics Fibreglass Caravans and he has a wealth of knowledge on them.
Good luck with it. Cheers Tory (torrich)

Hi VDR,
I've done a full restoration on an Olympic Debonair - there's a link in my signature below to see the results.
I painted mine two coats of automotive acrylic. If you choose to paint, you must use an etching primer designed for fibreglass first. I got my advise from a automotive paint store - there are options. Others have used enamel and others 2-pak; either way the etching primer is a must.
Cheers, OZ
