Had an interesting weekend retrieving an ol' pommy caravan..............
It'd been housed for many years on a beautiful property in the heart of WA's tall timber country 7 kms out of Pemberton.
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima052.jpg)

![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima011.jpg)
I was sent some pics of the caravan some weeks ago...................the property had been sold so the owner needed to find a new home for the caravan. I didn't know much about the type of caravan I was to retrieve, so our resident ol' pommy caravan' expert Cobber kindly did some research and emailed these pics of the 1957 "Car Cruiser Carissima" caravan that I was to pick up.
The photo's showed here are NOT the actual caravan I was to pick up, but are photos sent to me by Cobber of the same make & model of caravan ............

![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima018.jpg)
I had no idea what size ball an ol' pommy caravan would take , ...............luckily, it was easy .............50 mm
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima022.jpg)
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima026.jpg)
even came with its original annexe, and a bag of old wooden pegs and guide ropes
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima027.jpg)
as usual, I got the tough job of operating the winch, whilst the boys lifted the drawbar up and onto the truck
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima031.jpg)

![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima035.jpg)
one for Cobber
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima036.jpg)
the caravan is still registered, and wears an early (late 50's early 60's) Perth "U" series number plate, with the next letter "T" allocated for trailers and caravans
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima038.jpg)
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima039.jpg)

![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima043.jpg)
and so the long journey to Beverley began ......it was to be an interesting journey to say the least ........more on that later

The man who started this bad habit
Has to go and see a bloody doctor or some thing as you can only fit so many round pegs in a round hole and I think that green shed is now bursting at the seems In more ways than one. Brian

and so the sad tale of the ol' pommy caravan continues .....
If you have a look at this pic, where I've drawn the arrow, you'll notice the seem coming apart ......the problems actually started before the caravan was loaded onto the truck
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima026-1.jpg)
In Bridgetown, about 100 kms from Pemberton, ........called into to catch up with Megan & Richard, and borrowed some 100mph racing tape to do some running repairs to where the seem was coming apart, plus repairs to the door that was missing the bottom pins in the hinges ......
stopped about a further 250 kms at the Brookton pub for a beer n feed, and noticed the door had come adrift (still hanging there). Tried to replace the door, and tape it, but couldn't refit the door ......it was totally dark by then, so couldn't really see what the problem was, so removed the door and placed it inside the caravan.
On the 30km stretch between Brookton & Beverley, the right hand side of the caravan gave way, and was flapping in the breeze
Here's why the door wouldn't refit in Brookton, the floor had given way and the whole rear of the caravan was sagging
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima062.jpg)
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima063.jpg)
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima061.jpg)
and the right hand side ......what can I say
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima060.jpg)
the wheel is no longer parallel with the chassis
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima064.jpg)
shame, coz the caravan had sone nice little features: suspension:
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima059.jpg)
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima058.jpg)
fold down stove:

![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima083.jpg)
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima082.jpg)
neat little storage racks on the insides of the cupboards
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima080.jpg)
the little rear window is a like a "skylight" into the wardrobe
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima076.jpg)
number plate frame
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima066.jpg)
nice handles, that I thought were only reflectors
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima067-1.jpg)
oh dear, there's no frame, and the inside wall has totally rotted
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima079.jpg)
so, sadly the local resident vintage caravan wrecker got his hands on it:
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima077.jpg)
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/Carrisima075.jpg)
wouldn't a street machiner or hot rodder luv to get a hold of these lil succers for a caravan project ......they are in fact lights

Mate.... I think we should try and keep this to our selves, the poms love these Car Cruisers..... there could be an international incident if they find out what you've done to this one.
Sell the bits on eBay..... you'll make a motza.
Cobber.

Actually there was a thread on another site recently about imported English vans. The consensus seemed to be "ok but not up to aussie conditions"....... seems they were right.

And I thought you were supposed to be the god of caravan preservation.
How could you treat that fine English van with such contempt and disregard for her future well being.
Are you going to strip it for all the period goodies or is a restoration on the cards.
If you are stripping it bring the bits over to Cowra and set up a stall during the VC swap meet on Monday arvo. I might even come across and give you a couple of dollars for those light/handle things!
Even better might I suggest you keep the lights and get some cast up. I am sure there would be a market for some of those.
See you in Cowra.
Leigh.

golfview says:
"Oh dear, will the clipper be safe in your hands? you do realise there is no refund if she dosen't make it"
......stress less Sandy .......I just towed this little one for 900 kms behind the truck over some shocking NSW roads, .......and she made to Cowra without a problem
![[image] [image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/vntagevans/gofar.jpg)
The Clipper will be in safe hands ........trust me
Am still aiming to be at yours on the 7th,........ maybe a little earlier ......looking forward to it!
