Hi everyone, I am considering selling my beloved tiny 11ft Baravan ( I really really dont want to, but I have no time for it as well as the others and its just sitting there) its in extremely good condition inside, has a nice paint scheme outside, hydraulic override brakes, it just needs a new hatch (orig fell off and squashed itself) and the fridge needs reinstalling and a new oven (orig is there, good cond and british made but prev owner pulled it to bits). Imnot quite convinced on sellng it yet, so was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what it would be worth?

G'day chubi From our forum guidlelines VALUING CARAVANS The value of vintage caravans varies widely according to the age, scarcity, condition and desirability of the caravan in question. In the end, the value of a caravan depends on what one person is willing to pay another at a given time, based on their specific interests and preferences. For this reason we ARE NOT ABLE to assist in valuing caravans. cheers f/f ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hi, I tend to disagree with those guidelines. Being a member of a forum is to help one another by sharing information that isnt readily available to some ppl. It is a community driven spirit that helps such forums along. If one person is an expert on a particular subject (whether it be the value of an item or not) then why can't they be forthcoming with such information to those that don't have it? I'm simply asking because I'm not a Baravan expert, I wouldn't have a clue what its worth, where it was built, what its features were, nothing at all. I really don't want to let it go, but if its a desirable van then I would let it go because of the fact some enthusiast would want it and I would get some cash to spend on my '65 Chesney restoration. If its not rare and worth nothing, it might as well get stuck down the paddock and become a storage van. It angers me when I've sold an item I know nothing about for peanuts and then someone comes up and says Oh you could of got more for that its worth much much more. People come up to me many a time if I'm knowledged on a subject to ask my opinion, and I willingly give it, because its good human spirit to do so, and thats all I was asking of here. Cheers

Hi Chubi
I understand where you're coming from with your comments.
However, having said that, I've been on this forum almost from its start and certainly before this rule was introduced. The verbal bunfights and ill-feeling that price discussions evoked were unbelieveable. It caused members to quit the forum. Only a few months ago there was a real heated discussion about a van that was sold and shortly after, re-advertised at a much higher price, which caused a lot of upset amongst members.
The vintage caravan market is driven very much by supply and demand.
To give you an example of my own. I sold my Propert last year for an amount in excess of $7,000. However I also know of a Propert that needed no restoration work, being sold for $800! So who can say with authority, what a Propert is really worth?
As soon as we, on the forum, say a van is worth $XXXX, then we are setting the benchmark for van values. I doubt that any one of us here sets themselves up as expert van valuers.
As a way around it, perhaps you could ask any van owner who has/had a van such as you own to send you a private message with any information they may like to share in regard to its value.

I understand where you are coming from, I just simply do not know anybody with one and I'm not really up to speed with computers so I dont know how to search for them, that is why I simply posted the query.

Hopefully some current/former Bara owners will get in touch and give you some pointers.

Hi Chubi, Maybe post a detailed description and ask for offers? It's a little cutie, shame the fridge and the stove are missing though Hope you get what you are looking for and it goes to a good home, good luck with the sale! Vanessa and Penny PS. I have heard stories about the Propert that went for $800 but don't know which one it was. As for Penny I guess I paid what was being asked (a smidge less than Roeh3108 got for his) because she was the only one available at the time that didn't need any work since I don't have the time or skills to do a resto myself (and the last one that I know of since... I don't know what happened to the one that was for sale at the same time that needed a fair bit of work... but was half the price) and even though for the same amount of money you would get "more" in a more normal styled van (she has no stove or fridge.... I never quite get around to buying them for her) I like that I own something very much suited to what I want and so very easy to store.... she fits in a single car garage with my convertible Beetle.... I would have kicked myself if I had let her pass. For me she was definitely worth the money!

Hi Chubi
This is my first time and first post on this site, so I hope I don't break any rules so early in the piece!
I just bought (only picked her up on Sunday) a 1957 Munro Pixie which I am totally besotted with. She's in fairly original condition and licensed but needs work - polishing, some refitting of the cabinetry, rewiring and a bit of other beautification - but I thought she was magnificent when I bought her and I paid $4100 and don't regret a dollar of it.
I think there would be lots of people out there prepared to pay a fair sum for such a lovely van as yours. From what I can see from your pics, she's is better nick than my Pixie.
Good luck, Kyles

Hi,
Just an observation from me.
I am continually amazed that people offer things for sale on this ( & other) Forum, without even a hint of where the item lives.
Then no one knows whether it is easily purchased & transported to where they live.
If all members put the (general) area they live in the location in their profile, I would then know whether chubi lived in Darwin or Launceston. As it is I wouldnt have a clue.
Many vans are capable of being towed home by the purchaser, & that is infinitely better than throwing it on a trailer or truck to be towed a high speeds without it being checked regularly to see if anything has came loose.
It doesnt take a lot of thought to work these things out, but unfortunately a lot of us dont think real well about buying an old van then towing it in a safe manner.

Hi there JBJ. Just in reply to your comment on my post, I did not, at time of posting of this thread, offer this van for sale at all. I simply stated that I was CONSIDERING selling it, and I quote "was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what it would be worth?" If you must know, the van is at Newcastle NSW, but it is still not for sale until I decide whether its worthwhile selling. As it is, some have told me Baravans are collectible and have some value. Whether that is true or not, I have no idea. All I know is, that its worth the same amount irrespective of the van's current location, and I was thinking of possibly listing it on ebay for about $1500 and seeing what the response was. I don't want a million dollars for it, at the end of the day its just an old caravan to the rest of the world (read non van nuts), but it is a very cute and very good condition van, and I dont really want to get rid of it. However, if the price was right, and importantly IT WAS GOING TO A GOOD HOME then I would probably let her go. If it was valued at SFA regardless of condition, I would keep it and leave it for the future to be reregistered. I am not being forced to sell it, altho the cash would really help out at this time, but I'm not going to let it go for a song either.
A short story here too. My brother bought what we think is a 1958 model Paramount timber 15ft van last year on ebay. Before bidding, I contacted my usual towie for a quote as the van was in Maryborough Victoria. He could not do the job, but put us onto a "reputable" caravan transport company. We contacted them and they quoted us $500 to take from Maryborough to Newcastle NSW. We agreed, bid and won the van, and made all arrangements for it to be picked up. 24 hours before its due pickup, the transport company called us to say the quote had now been increased to $800. I told the ripoffs fairly where they could place their quote (a deal is a deal in my book), called the sellers who assured us the van was quite safe to tow and had only been unreg for 18 months. We took a gamble, and got a permit for the van and drove down there. Arriving at the house, we found that the lights didn't work, but I had brought my boat tailboard along in case, and we strung it on the back with a sign saying "VAN UNDER VEHICLE PERMIT". The police never bothered us once. We also took two spare wheels just in case, but its wheels performed admirable and she towed home 1000km at 80khm with no problems whatsover for a cost of $30 permit, $250 fuel and McDonalds lunches.

I have a fair amount of projects on the go ('65 21foot Chesney Regal timber framed, '57 built van project I want to teardrop) and I bought the Bara off my best friend because of its cuteness and good condition. However, it had been parked at her relo's, and in between my purchasing it and picking it up, her relo's had removed?dismantled the stove and dropped the fridge on the ground, without her knowing. And on my picking it up, the roof hatch which was locked down, flew off after its latches broke and the hatch flattened itself on the road. Since then, she has sat forlornly waiting to be repaired to the condition I bought her in, but it really depressed me to be honest. She was bought to be a quick registered van to enjoy while my '68 Ambassador was stripped out and refurbished internally, but she has become a project of her own. I still intended to keep it and fix it, but I recently lucked out and got a mid '60s Viscount in brilliant condition off a workmate (was on their recently acquired property under a carport, sellers just left it there) and apart from tyres and a new bed, its roadworthy. So that has softened my "keep" attitude to the Baravan, and I've decided to offload the Ambassador and a '67 Valiant along with it. Register the Viscount, build a body for the teardrop and pay somebody else to do the framework on the Chesney/do it myself.

give us a call today on 0415 189 675 ill tell u about it Hi Chubbi, Sorry, I haven't been on here for a while.... and when I am I give up in disgust and go home early (as it were) a victim of the annoying pop up ads that some other people are having to deal with too... $1700+ was the lowest quote for Penny to go from the north coast of NSW to Adelaide.... towed behind a ute with a lightboard. The fact that she was registered and roadworthy was irrelevant to the transport company..... other quotes were over $2000, and everyone else wouldn't touch an unregistered and unroadwothy wooden van because they all decintigrate and fall appart on tilt trays.... Dad went and picked her up for me.... and the return trip cost $500. Good luck selling your vans. We will be looking for another one sometime (to go behind my boyfriend's Kombi, it has a bigger motor than mine and can deal with a litle more weight....) but the budget won't stretch that far yet. I hope they all go to good homes Someone who will reassemble them! Vanessa and Penny
