HI All, it's been a while since I've updated this thread, but for good reason, we've been hard at it with the tools and spit-polish to get to today, when we finally have our Shitbox Rally Vauxhall Victor registered!!

There's still some niggles (temp gauge doesn't work and fuel gauge invents levels as you drive) but we're super excited to have it registered and are ready to hit the road.

In more good news we're only a couple of hundred dollars short of $3,000 in money raised for the Cancer Council so far which is a great start, although we're always keen for more http://everydayhero.com.au/desertsailors

Had an interesting night last night, as Melbourne locals would be aware we had a 'little bit' of rain yesterday afternoon. The Vauxhall is safely locked up behind a gate in the spare loading dock at work, undercover and out of the way. With the torrential rain I thought I would take a quick look to make sure the Victor was OK before heading home. I'll let the photos do most of the explaining:

We dragged it out at around 9pm and pulled all the drainplugs out of the floor. There is water in the sump, but everything else looked ok so we put the key in the ignition, dash lights came on, headlights/indicators/wipers worked, turned the key and it fired straight up! :D Relief is an understatement.

Here's what it looks like the next morning:

and straight through the interior

As a result of this incident I am now confident we shose the correct team name for the Shitbox Rally, team Desert Sailors seems very fitting, and in reverence to Top Gear I now know our Victor as the Vaux-boat-all

Hi Guys

Hope there's no permanent damage done to your Vauxhall Super from its little dip - still able and ready to rally?

Cheers

I'm going to flush the oil tonight as water got into it through the dipstick, but other than that there appears no damage, all electrics work, it fires up, it's just had it's first bit of practice for river crossings :D

Hi Melburgorbust,

What terrible luck with the Victor, but how amazing that it started without too much trouble afterwards. It's definitely survived its first test. It should float through all the rest. Oops, sorry I could have put that better! ;) ;) ;)

Hope all your other preparations go to plan without any further hiccups.

Thanks all for the support, I can say for certain after watching that happen that the Victor definitely DOESN'T float! :D drained about 5 litres of water out of the sump today and about half a litre out of the gearbox and replaced the oil in both and it now seems to be running fine, need to flush the oil again tomorrow but am pretty confident there is no damage done.

Thanks guys, The gearbox will need to be reflushed, but I have drained and refilled it once, I opened up the diff and there seemed to be only oil in there and up to the correct level, so I don't believe any water got in there, and it wasn't quite high enough to reach the clutch or brake master cylinders. Brake action feels as mediocre as ever so i don't think there's any water in there :P

Had some fun today test driving it, bouncing and backfiring like a pig, figured it was some water in the fuel so drained that and put some fresh in, cleaned up all the spark plugs and connections and got a little moisture out of the dizzy and it ran well from Ringwood to Croydon but was then undriveable on the way back. Turned out it wasn't water related, the outer part of the points was working it's way up it's spindle and losing contact with the other part!!! quick clean of connections, push it back down and it purrs along, will have to change them soon, hopefully tonight before our launch at the Lucky Coq in Prahran tomorrow.

A little update, the Victor has been pushed into daily service this week, and so far so good (aside from spitting a wiper within 2min of leaving home this morning), strengthened the roofrack a little and am testing it with some weight, get some funny looks in suburbia!

What's mroe exciting, thanks to the $300 raised through the model auction we are very nearly at our $4k minimum fundraising! Great news since we leave 1 month from tommorow

We've broken $4k!

Very exciting news, we've now fundraised over $4,000! There's still more in the works, but less than a month to go before the rally and the car's registered and running well, we've reached our minimum fundraising target and we're itching to get underway. Big thankyou to everyone who has supported us so far.

Not sure how much realy rough road you have in front of you but i think that the roof rack will not make it as it is , some welded in brace,s from the legs to the basket part would extend its life .
good luck Kel.

Thanks Kel, I've reinforced the rack slightly (welded the horizontal adjusters to the main body) but we will also be taking a lot of the weight out of it for the rally, just loaded it up for testing

Hello,

A good thing to do with the roof rack is to drill and bolt the gutter mount brackets together. Don't rely on the wing nuts onto the studs which are normally welded on. Make sure you use flat washers and a spring washer as well. In the past I have used ¼" gutter bolts.

Have a great trip,

Cheers,
Ian.

It's time!

Tommorow morning the rally begins! The Vaux-Boat-All has been pushed into daily service all week after a condensor failure gave us a scare last week and things are looking good. Not using oil or water noticeably, no new rattles...

Just wanted to say a big thankyou to everyone who's supported us along the way, we've worked our butts off to get this car on the road and raise the funds necessary to compete, and every dollar donated and every kind word on the forums has helped us along the way. We've raised just under $6,000 now and are very proud of the effort for a couple of students in their 20's. We be sure to update everyone with plenty of pics at the end of the trip.

We Made It!!

After 3500 LONG km the Vauxhall Victor and the majority of other shitboxes made it to Cairns last Friday afternoon.

Our Victor made it through mostly unscathed, with only a cracked radiator causing issues on the road (aside from some rubbish fuel and woeful handling :P ) We ended up raising around $6,000, and as a bonus the Victor sold before auction for $1,000 which also goes into our fundraising efforts for the Cancer Council.

We loved being on the rally, so many great people and sights, all of the little towns we stayed in were so welcoming and the scenery was absolutely stunning. We proved what is possible in an old car and look forward to doing it all again next year.

For those interested, the event put together a set of great videos of for each day of the rally which are available to view here: http://www.shitboxrally.com.au/shitbox-rally-2012-watch-all-the-videos/ we make a brief appearance in nearly every video and were wrapped to feature in the second half of the day 5 video. We also make a couple of appearances in a segment for The Project on Channel 10 (fast forward to 2:20) http://theprojecttv.com.au/video.htm?movideo_p=39696&movideo_m=179989

We're exhausted and thrilled and in need of some spinal realignment after 10 hours a day on bench seats so I will leave you with some highlight photos of the trip:

Hello Melburgorbust

Thank you so much for keeping us up to date with your progress - a total of $7k including the sale of the Vauxhall - an excellent result for a wonderful cause!

The pictures are very entertaining! It looks like you had a wonderful time on your trip - and there certainly were a bunch of other characters who would have kept you both amused as well.

Congratulations on your achievement! :)

Great to hear you guys made it. I saw so many of your cars as I was returning from SA, and even spoke to some tail-end charlies who were having a bit of trouble, but seemed to know what they were doing to fix it at a servo in NW Victoria. Great to hear you made it relatively unscathed. Sounds like you all had a fun trip and congrats on raising all that money.
