Thanks Sandra, I called them all, just way out of my budget. My plan B was to pick it up myself, but i thought I'd try and see if anyone was heading north. Never know, one can only try

Hi Campdog, thanks! Look forward to hear if you come up with any ideas...otherwise I will have to drive down, I love long road trips just never towed a caravan before and I prefer to start with small trips.

Hi
I had a hard time with Penny Propert... and she's only 6ft long. Basically I got told there was no such thing as insurance (too old) and they had to tow it down behind a ute because it was unroadworthy, the bearings would need to be looked at first, it's unregistered and all wooden vans would just decintergrate from the vibrations if put on a truck! And they still wanted about $2,000 (I only had 2 quotes some companies never even replied to my emails... one just over and one just under) for the trip.... wayyy outside my budget..
My dad went and got it while away on one of his own business trips... just needed a different car than what he would usually use... And the whole trip cost about $500 NSW coast to Adelaide. I would have gone myself but couldn't get the time off work and couldn't get a car with a towball....
Good luck with your search!
Vanessa

Hi Vanessa, that's funny, I think I called that company as well, same deal, he would have to tow which he said would make it cheaper. I guess the cost of fuel, wear and tear as well as labour all adds up.
So your dad ended up towing it? Did he have the wheel bearings or anything done to it before towing? Thanks for your imput, gives me a little more confidence, one way or another we will get it home.

Is it worth asking the seller to have a mechanic check the bearings/tyres for you before deciding to come and pick it up yourself? That way you will know if it's towable before coming down.

Have you tried Dave from Treasured Transport ? His is listed is our links . He travels from melbourne to brisbane and all places in between but unsure if he can do the van with his truck and trailer. Worth a phone call as he is a good guy to deal with.

Hi!
Sorry I was a bit vague... what annoyed me with the guy I got the email from was how presumptive he was... Penny P Propert was actually registered. And roadworthy... I sent him links to pictures that PROVED it! If you were talking to the same company I'm glad you didn't decide to use them... Penny used to belong to another forum member... who suggested the "road trip" idea when I was discussing pick up with her. Dad asked her how good the bearings were when he picked Penny up... and she said they were fine. If they weren't he would have got them done before he went too far I hope... anyway the mate who went with him had bearing grease just in case, and has done it before (in all the travelling my Dad has done whith caravans he's never greased the bearings himself...) The only drama (other than a jacknife) was the NSW standard is a 7 pin flat plug and in SA it is round...
There was no way I was going to pay $2,000 to put over 1500kms of wear on my tiny little van... If my dad could do the trip for $500 in both directions I just couldn't justify what they wanted to charge one way... I will be getting the barings done before I go on a big trip.... although I have to take her over the pits to get registered in my name so if they're no good I'm sure they'll tell me!
Does the previous owner know how long it's been since the bearings were done? Vanessa
