Hi All I have been fortunate enough to have been given some photos of some rallies that the RACV Caravan Club held. The first. Barwon Heads, Victoria October 9th, 1937 And a little later in Easter 1938 Same place, but a little better This one is several years later at Warburton. February 1959 actually... Mark... look very carefully............... To say that I am excited about what I have been given is an understatement. More to follow

G'day Bobt, They are really great photos ...thanks for sharing them with us, and you have MORE ? We have been finding news about the formation of the RACV caravan club in the newspaper searches we are doing and it appears that they had these rallies every month for the first year or so..... but photos, that is something else..... WOW ! Now all we have to do is identify some of the caravans..... and come to think about it that photo of yours taken at San Remo in 1938 is a bigger and better photo of the one I posted here.@ reply # 4.... but I didn't know the significance of it then. Keep 'em coming. Cobber.

Hi Cobber Thanks I thought I had seen this photo somewhere before. But for the life of me I could not recall where. Hey Surf Tragic I aint that old so I was never at any of these. Yes I have more. I have been fortunate enough to have been supplied these by the individual that was able to document the club history she completed it recently. There have been a couple of attempts to do it. A real big job requiring a lot of dedication to the task. People had stuff everywhere. I have copies of the articles from "The Radiator" looking for persons interested in taking part in a caravan club, more photos and a promise of more to come. Don Caravans... No hope ;D ;D The Robinson family were rather active in the RACV Caravan Club... I guess if some one looks carefully in the photos that will follow we might just spot one. ;D sorry no idea when or where. I just love the clothes they wore when out on there adventures

G'day Bob, In the first photo at Barwon heads I reckon I can see four Don caravans and one... maybe two.. Land Cruisers...... have to wait until Don R. gets out of bed, he can probably see six Dons there . I'm kind of interested in that 'van third from the center of the photo on the right...... lantern roof and quarter circle windows.... different to Ol' 36 but sort of similar . And the 'van in the center of the field over to the left looks like it could be “The Nomad” as shown in DHL on the Home Comfort thread. The Easter rally at San Remo has two “Land Cruisers” in the foreground. That's my lot . Cobber.

Hi Cobber and Bobt, Well the Barwon Heads photo is fascinating. I can see what could well be two Dons, and several Land Cruisers, but the thing that really surprised me most was that a couple of the people at the first RACV caravan rally in 1937 took their satellite dishes!! They must have been personal friends of John Logie Baird, or maybe they were just on the internet? Don Ricardo ;D ;D ;D

I've managed to acquire ... some close-up shots of that panorama that bobt posted above (minus the satellite dishes ) How many “Dons” can you see there.... how many “Land Cruisers”.... and can you see the “Nomad”..... and could that be the elusive “Airlite”... Where are you Don R ? Cobber.

This photo was taken at the RACVs second Caravan Club rally at Yumbunga Lake in November 1937. I've been asked where Yumbunga Lake is.... all that I've been able to discover is information regarding this book published in 1996...... does anybody know more about "Yumbunga Lake" ? "The rise and fall of Healesville's Lake Yumbunga" Author(s): Bryn Jones Place of Publication: Healesville, Victoria, Australia Publisher: Bryn Jones Year Published: 1996 Edition: 1st edition Physical description: 56 pages. Dimensions: 28.3 x 20.0 x 0.4 cm. Includes black and white photos and illustrations. ISBN: 0646287486 Description: The purpose of this publication is to try to discover the motivation for the creation of Lake Yumbunga, what developments were planned for it, whic of them did and which did not take place, what the lake and its surrounds were like during its heyday, and why its use and popularity declined and finally ceased.
You can read more about the formation of this lake if you CLICK HERE Cobber.

Hey Cobber, you're not gunna believe this.....I have a mate who lives around the corner in Fairview .....we've driven past that "lake" every time we've been to his house.....it just looks like a fair sized dam.....maybe it shrunk from when they took that picture ;D.....oh,and we've already done the "tin hunt" previously, all we found was a Hillman and some old Hold-ons (tho Percy from Fairview has a '32 Inter as yard art in his front yard and a '49 Chev in the backyard).....no old caravans ;D ;D
